-Just had a phone interview for a 2+ month contracting gig in Framingham. I seem pretty well suited to the job, we'll have to see if I get a face-to-face. There was a mild bit of panic partway through; my father (the high-tech CFO) recommended that I ask $75 as an hourly rate. I thought that was kinda high, so I actually asked $60, at which point there was an awkward pause. The best my interviewer could offer was a fair piece lower. [sigh] Oh well, it'll be better than $zero/hour, which is what I'm making now.

There used to be a rule of thumb that said you ask for $X/hr where X was your annual salary in thousands. So if you were making/want to make $75,000/yr, then $75/hr is reasonable. In my experience this rule doesn't hold anymore. I am seeing rates around $X/2 at the low end to $X/1.5 at the more reasonable end.

Cool, but what a sucky commute for you that would be.

-Not really; about half an hour with minimal traffic. I've had worse.

Dad thinks were'll all 100% more awesome than we actually are. Which is nice in a father and all, except for the detailed practical advice.
