The first moment I identified as a science fiction fan, was when our grade-school librarian said, "I see you like spaceships and things like that! Here, I think you'll enjoy R Is For Rocket." And I did.

While I could toss out a hundred criticisms of Mr. Bradbury's work, I'd rather say that SF needs its poets as much as its engineers, that nostalgia is best when dandelion-scented, and books are far better read than burnt.

That sounds remarkably like my experience in the elementary school library - even the same book! (Though I found it on my own).
Before that, I'd never even heard of the genre.

R.I.P., Ray Bradbury. You changed my life, in the best way.
