woodwardiocomThe Silver Age Doom Patrol Omnibus and The Bronze Age Batgirl Omnibus
Given that these two volumes literally overlap in timespan, calling one "Silver Age" and one "Bronze Age" is an interesting choice. (The actual reason is there was a Batgirl before Babs who's more Silver Age-y, and a Doom Patrol after this one that's more Bronze Age-y.) The DP stories start out spooky, quickly transition to very bog-standard DC Silver Age fare, and then gradually shift to a more kooky, "hip" ambiance, just in time to be canceled. Featuring the first appearance of Garfield Logan. The Batgirl stories are mostly short, and the male authors are about as good at writing a woman as you'd expect. (It's pretty transparent that the only reason her boyfriend, Jason Bard is disabled, is to "explain" why Batgirl is a better fighter than him.) This volume covers her election to the US House Of Representatives, a forgotten era these days.Ninefox Gambit and Raven Stratagem by Yoon Ha Lee
Weird Space Opera, set in an dystopian caste-ridden interstellar empire, where the ghost of a murderer may be our only hope. Recommended. How To Read Water and How To Read Nature by Tristan Gooley
The "Water" volume is longer and full of more practical advice, but both are nice guides to how to get the most out of your time in the outdoors. Recommended. The Ventifact Colossus and The Crosser's Maze by Dorian Hart
The first two novels in a fantasy series by an old college friend. (Between me, Ed Aubry, Rich Dansky, Dorian, and others, we had a lot of talent at old Wes.) They wear their D&D origins on their sleeve, but they are engaging, fun, and Dorian does a good job juggling lots of characters. Recommended.
