It's broadly hard to pick a Best, because they're often excelling in slightly different ways. But if I had to pick just one? Kindred, without hesitation. Stands alone, has a full novel of scale to work in, all the unsettling and tinges of body horror and grim banal realizations about the nature of power and trade-offs and compromises below it, without ever getting distracted from its point.
