Roo: Children Reflect

The other day, Roo asked me to put one of her teddy bears on top of her wardrobe. I decided to place it lying on its belly, so it could look down on us. She pouted, and said, "Daddy, that's no' gonna work."

So, I placed it properly in a sitting position, and reflected on how I wasn't aware how often I used that phrase until my child started parroting it back at me...

Oh, yes. I've learned a lot about what I say by what I hear from Alice. Even odder, in some ways, is hearing a phrase that you don't say and realizing she's picked it up elsewhere. On the phone from Seattle, Alice started saying "yep...yep" in response to questions. When I asked "Who says 'yep'?" she immediately said "Grandma Trish."

Reminds me of Robin Williams' discovery of how much he swore when he heard his 2 year old sitting in the corner yelling "F*&k You! F*&k You! F*&k You!F*&k You!" and decided he might do a better job at curbing his language.

My parents used to refer to kids as "little pitchers" in the sense of water pitchers. Everything poured in them comes pouring right back out.
