Too Wide

Is it appropriate to complain when someone posts an image to LJ that's too darn wide? I hate having to scroll right to read every post on my friends page, until the offender drops off the bottom...

I think it would be okay to make a comment along the lines of "Hey, just so you know, this is too wide for a lot of the standard friends page layouts (including mine), so it makes it hard to see your photo properly and to read the rest of the page. Could you post photos in a smaller size?". Of course, they may not know how to, or how to then link to the larger size.

Or you could ask for a LJ-cut.

Format, replacing square brackets with pointy ones:

[lj-cut text="This is a really big photo!"]

PHOTO!

[/lj-cut]

You don't even need the text part. [Lj-cut] [/Lj-cut] will work just fine. Even if you pick capital Ls instead of little ls, far as I know.

It bugs me, too.

Yes, it is, but as suggested it helps if you can point them to info about how to fix it.

It's annoying, but the Firefox extension "Nuke Anything" makes it much less so. Scroll down, see the image, most of the time enjoy it, then right-click "remove this object" and problem vanishes.

Or, adblockplus will also do this.

You can change your settings to clip any images over a certain size, replacing it with a neutral thumbnail.

That's what I do. Especially useful since I check LJ on a lot of different computers with varying browser width.

My first temptation was to tick you off for entertainment value. The temptation lasted for, um, more than a quarter of a second...

I think it's appropriate with the usual caveats: be nice, be tactful, offer solutions and don't just complain, etc.
