To save room, I'm finally moving my CDs out of their plastic cases and into binders. (They're all ripped to digital anyway, so it's not like I need ready access.) I just did a quick check to see if CD cases are recyclable, and found out that they're plastic type 6, and "notoriously hard to recycle".

However, the Malden sanitation website clearly states that they take plastic types 1 through 7, so I'm going to assume they know something I don't.

(Unless someone out there was in need of jewel cases? No? Didn't think so.)

Having done the binder thing many years ago, you may wish to consider simply going to sleeves (search on CaseLogic ProSleeves for an example). Binders are fine as long as you either don't have any sort of cataloguing method (which I consider unlikely, knowing you...) or you don't plan on ever adding any new CDs to your collection (possibly less unlikely, if you've made the switch to digital).

Sleeves, however, are nice and sortable. Also more portable.

So I've thought about doing this, but I would really like to save all of the inserts etc. from the CDs. Most of them I can just put in an adjacent pocket, but is there a good solution for Digipaks and the like?

I'll cross that bridge once all the standard jewel cases are gone. I don't have that many outré cases.

Anything I did would have to have adequate storage for all the U cards as well as the booklets/cover inserts. I've yet to see anything that handles this well. As for non-standard packaging, you're just SOL and have to maintain that as a separate box of archival material.

(1379 Albums, 1675 disks... all still in their original packaging)(and 199 albums of legal downloads.)

Given that I have roughly 1/10th as many disks as you, I think I care about this at a different level than you.

I had good luck advertising my jewel cases on the "free" section of craigslist. They were gone within a couple of hours and I got several additional emails so someone must have had a use for 'em.

Yep, I went this path before we moved last time. The internal real estate required to have 3 adults' music out? Forget it. I have 4 binders that have pages that can be removed if need be, so I can add pages in the middle if I guessed incorrectly about where things would expand.

We have done this

and I'm less likely to grab music from there and have not ripped all the music onto the computer yet. However, as for the jewel cases, donate them to your local library. They have a continuous need for them as the CDs they send out don't always come back with the cases in good nik.

I kind of want to take all of the jewel cases and make a wall someday. Like glass block, only not.

However, I will not take anybody's jewel cases, because my landlord would not approve.

The Medford Public Library can always use jewel cases.

I could use some jewel cases to replace the broken ones . Could you set some aside for me please?

I bought a case (of a few hundred) standard jewel cases, several years back, and found that the number of broken cases in my collection was more like a handful. I'd be happy to give anyone a dozen or two.

How many do you need, roughly?

For me, since all my music is ripped anyway and I'm just keeping the CDs for backup, I store my CDs in CD storage boxes, lined up in alphabetical order by artist, first each disc and then all its inserts/lyrics. No jewel cases. You can fit a LOT of them in there that way, and they're easy to "walk" through with a couple of fingers to find one I want.
