-I've noticed a disturbing trend. Nancy Lebovitz's Button Catalog is getting less funny as I get older and more jaded, but it's also home to more and more things that I actually remember saying myself.
I never realized I was SMOFish, until at worldcon last year, the parody of the daily newsletter had a joke in it that was based on a button that I had Nancy make for me ten years ago (it's a particularly Can-fan joke, directed at Andre Lieven). Andre was amused by it, fortunately, and bought some buttons for other close friends of his, and I got enough inquiries about it that Nancy added it to her catalog for a while.
*I* hadn't thought of it in years, until it appeared in the parody, and when I commented on it to someone else, her comment was "Gosh, everyone says that. You're not fannish in Canada until you know the meaning of that button."
So a one off joke, twelve years ago, in Baltimore, apparently defines Canadian fandom. And I had no idea, because I was in another country, where no one cared about Andre Lieven much.
-Well, on January 1st, 2000, I posted to Elbows about "Where's my flying car that folds up into a briefcase?" And one of my random sigs, for a long time, was "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." Neither are exactly original to me, but it was still startling to see them in the catalog.
Funny, I'd have thought she'd have added my custom request from Arisia by now. After I wore a button saying, "I'm cuter on my knees" she said she got a lot of requests for it. ;)
