No Computer

My main computer's motherboard died a while back.  I decided to replace it with something recent enough to not be snicker-worthy.  Since I was clinging to a lot of older standards (AGP, IDE, DDR1, ETC), this has had frustrating cascade effects only resolvable via multiple trips to MicroCenter and Best Buy.  Grumble.

I've been watching W00T! for a computer replacement. I just want to get rid of the monstrousity in the living room.

Nothing like a little yak shaving to brighten your day!

You really don't do something like that in stages, you bite the bullet, figure out everything that needs to be replaced and get it all at once.

Agreed. It doesn't sound like there's much of anything salvageable in there, unless maybe you had SATA drives and not IDE.

Hey, I salvaged the case, the power supply, the sound card, the "extra USB ports" card, and the optical drive.

I am sorry to hear that you've been bitten repeatedly. This sort of frustration is what drove me away from "replace the motherboard" solutions toward "just buy a goddamn new PC" solution. When I computed the value of my time it seemed a wise investment for me since I am particularly un-skilled in these things.

It's been annoying to usually need to replace everything because all of the standards have been replaced. I've been kind of surprised how long PCI-E and DDR3 have lasted (multiple whole years). And, well, IDE (now called PATA) lasted a while, so I guess I hope SATA will too. Although my motherboard still has a PATA connector, good for two drives. But it's annoying to still have that one ribbon cable to my DVDR.
