The Roo has been a little fussier than usual lately. At one point last evening, I sat down with her on the yoga ball to bounce her to sleep. She eventually drifted off. I carried her over to the bassinet, put her in, let go. She woke up a bit, fussed, and started to cry.

So I picked her up, sat down with her on the yoga ball, and bounced some more. She eventually drifted off. I stood up, slowly. Still asleep. I walked over to the bassinet, slowly. Still asleep. I carefully lowered her into the bassinet, but didn't let go. Still asleep. I disengaged my hands almost entirely, until I reached the point where she was merely holding my fingers with her hands. Still asleep. I freed one hand. Still asleep. I freed the other hand... She woke up, fussed, and started to cry. I quickly re-engaged my fingers with her hands, and she settled back down into sleep.

"I may be in trouble here," I thought...

Heh. Iiiiiii recall some times like that. (Indeed, I had to lie down with the kid. My spouse was typing my responses whilst I was GMing an online game, at the time, since I could read sideways, but not type very well.

If she continues fussy, do pay attention to things like ear infection potential, etc., though.

Clearly she needs a set of tiny bike handlebars to sleep with.

Yes, this is entirely normal, healthy behavior for such a young infant. And the trepidation is normal for you parental primates, too. :)

Wow, do I ever remember this phase.
I used to do a daily transition between afternoon walk in a front carrier and putting her down in bed for the rest of her nap. It took some practice, but eventually I got good enough at it that she rarely woke up, and I got some quiet time until she was done with her nap.

Maybe you could try putting something else out for her to grab onto when you take one hand away? The edge of a blanket might even be an acceptable substitute for your finger until she settles in to her new position.

Maybe a warm water bottle? Something that makes her feel like she's connecting?

This was around the time [livejournal.com profile] hammercock and I had the idea of Xander sleeping in our bed since the temprapedic mattress helped resisted that. Also, I bounced him longer than usual even after he started nodding off to make damn sure he's out.
