So, I need to be able to programmatically assign codenames to projects here at work. In a given day there might be, say, 30 of these projects. The codenames are just there for identification purposes.

To make them easy to remember, I don't want to just assign numbers. My thinking is to take a random English word, that starts with the same letter as the name of the relevant client, and tack on an incrementing number. So, a project for Microsoft might be Muskrat-12, while a project for Nuance Inc. might be Nacho-7.

For this to work, I need a list of short, well-known, inoffensive words. Preferably a long list. Such things surely exist; the Army uses them to assign codenames. However, my Google-fu failed me. Anyone got a suggestion?

(I'll probably also include a button that says, "We don't like that codename, roll me a new one," just for safety.)

There are a number of lists here; it includes a table of pre-1956 military alphabets.

You could use world leaders! To avoid any controversy, though, you might want to stick to dead ones, so a project for Microsoft could be Milošević-12, a project for Nuance Inc. could be Napoleon-7, and a project for HP could be Hitler-3.

Some of those might be offensive to people who hear them. Hitler is a great example of that.

I suggest colors.

Animal names are mostly inoffensive, and seem like they would be pretty safe in this context.

There are easy-to-find lists of towns in any given state and they have the added value of being pre-organized. So our first was Allston, second Boston, third Cambridge and so on.
