Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs died yesterday, appallingly young. (He was only 14 years older than me.) I live in a non-Apple home, work in a non-Apple office, and my career is founded on the technologies in direct competition with Apple. Nevertheless, my life and world would be profoundly different if not for Jobs' vision. He and his decided how computers (and, decades later, phones) should work, and we now live in that world.

And, frankly, if St. Pete is checking Jobs' credentials on a computer, I bet it's a Mac.

He was five years younger than I am. That really seems "appallingly young" to me. And I think he's a great loss to all of us.

He did seem to have a unique talent for getting the best work out of large organizations of technical and creative people, but I would not have ever wanted to encounter him in person.

Really? Did he have a rep for being a jerk?

He has an EPIC LEGEND for being a jerk.

Heaven being a Mac shop would be about the only point in his favor.

[livejournal.com profile] garote took it really hard, having worked there for five years until this July when he left to pursue a different career. I didn't know what to feel about the news at first, having only come to the Mac world in the last two years. But the more I thought about it, the more I was able to see how he'd inspired not just G and his friends who still work at Apple, but an entire generation of computer geeks, artists, and thinkers.

And that thought, today, finally, has made me sad as his early passing.
