Despite being briefly obsessed with this movie back in 1979, I'd never actually seen it until today.

It stands as proof positive that trying to achieve the prestige of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the money-making power of Star Wars by combining a hard-science ambience with adorable robots and laser fights Just Won't Work. Adding in a lot of Forbidden Planet didn't help either. And jamming in that inane shooting gallery sequence at the last minute (which nearly derailed the plot) was also ill-advised.

(Not that the science is all that hard. Decompression appears to happen only when the plot demands it.)

Wow. Bad.

It has it's charm, and could have been a good movie in that 70's slow paced SF way if they'd left out all of the cute robot crap. About 20 minutes less of it seems about right.

The sad part is that they made history by showing the first computer generated image on film. (The opening credits.)

It might be the first raster scan computer graphics, but STAR WARS (1977) had vector graphics in the mission briefing.

I remembered this as an awesome film from when I saw it as a kid in the cinemas back in '79. Got it recently on DVD, and only then realised how bad it was.
