Thinking About Female Heroes
Mar. 30th, 2011 04:12 pmBoth DC Comics and Marvel Comics publish top-quality reprint volumes of their early comics, DC as "Archive Editions" and Marvel as "Masterworks".
Now that I know I'm having a daughter, I've been putting some more female-superhero-comics-collections on my Amazon wish list, and I noticed something. DC has Archive Editions for Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Black Canary, amounting to some 10 volumes in all. A small percentage of their whole output, but it's something.
Marvel, by contrast, has two volumes of Jungle Adventures starring Lorna, the Jungle Girl (who I'd never heard of), and that's it for Masterworks about female characters. (And technically those were anthology comics featuring other characters in addition to Lorna.)
C'mon, Marvel. The early years of She-Hulk and Spider-Woman may not have been high art, but they deserve Masterworks more than Lorna, for Pete's sake.

Date: 2011-03-31 11:20 am (UTC)At least there are more modern heroes to choose from now. I was astounded by how much more I was gearing up for battle getting ready on the off-chance I we, too, were to have (? wtf tense for this?) a girl. She's going to have to fight just a bit harder for her piece of the cake. Good thing you're there to provide proper reading material.
