-Took Jen/[livejournal.com profile] anotherjen to see Return of the King today. My second viewing in the theater. I was more affected by it this time; serious misting of the optics occurred during "I am no man," "You bow to no one," and the Grey Havens, to name but three. I have said this before, but it bears repeating: I think Jackson's LotR movies have their flaws, but I also think that better movies based on Tolkien's books would have to be handed down directly as a gift from God. "I BRING YOU THESE TEN COMMANDMENTS: ONE: THOU SHALT NOT IMPUGN FARAMIR'S CHARACTER. TWO: THE SCOURING? IT GOES BACK IN. THREE..."

-Having been part of geek social circles all my life, I know many people who are huge Tolkien geeks. It's a bit surprising to realize that I'm a moderately large one myself. Had to restrain myself from whispering pointless trivia in Jen's ear, like "The batterimg ram is named 'Grond' after Morgoth's mace." (To which she no doubt would have replied, "Who the heck is Morgoth?")

-Oh, and I think I noticed that, when Aragorn first looks down the path of the dead, there are faint ghostly figures in the far distance. Almost impossible to see even on the big screen.

Yay, LOTR!! I agree with the Commandments; they really screwed with Faramir, and not like *I* would have ;) I do remember noticing the ghostly figures in the mountains when I saw the movie. Cooool effects. And definitely my favorite part. I liked the ghosties.

Who the heck is Morgoth, indeed. Let us all sing...actually, I need to re-read the "Silmarillion". Most of it is a blur.

-I discovered that it's much easier to get through Silmarillion if you have a copy of The Atlas of Middle-Earth close at hand. The maps in the book itself are just inadequate. (And not the Maps of Middle-Earth, which are a different beastie, and not as good.)

Note that in the movie, as Grond comes out, the hordes are chanting "grond" in the movie. Nice detail, especially given that it is only *one paragraph* of the book!

That said, if the Houses of Healing aren't in the extended release, I'm handing PJ his spleen on a platter. -H...
