Hellboy, Reviewed
Apr. 3rd, 2004 01:27 pm-So, saw Hellboy last night with Tom/
bluegargantua and some of his friends. Got to do my extremely minor celebrity bit (no no, more minor than that -- like, way below Gary Gygax). Entertaining bunch of people.
-As to the movie, it was a solid and fun comic book movie. It didn't have the bloody excesses of del Toro's previous film (Blade II) -- in fact, I've seen director's notes which are very clear about him wanting minimal blood. There were a bunch of changes from the comic, and while in many cases I prefer the originals, the new versions were interesting, too.
-In hindsight, it suffered a bit from being kinda similar to Men in Black. Secret government agency which deals with weirdos, yup. New guy learning the ropes, yup. Desperate "you didn't see that" excuses to the public, yup. The big bad's denouement was also similar in some details. So, it didn't feel like a new idea in those ways. The mystical bits helped.
-Oh, and visually, it was gorgeous. Outstanding special effects, almost all of which were convincing. Perlman was both imposing and funny as "Red". Very few complaints about the supporting cast (except maybe about the voice of Abe, which was not distinct enough from Niles Crane).
-So, recommended, and not solely because of my connection to the film.
