-Yesterday I audited a D&D game, to see if it and I would be compatible. I haven't played any flavor of D&D since 1st edition in college, but I've been following 3rd edition with a great deal of interest. While GURPS is still my true RPG love, now I reeeally understand the appeal of D&D 3e. The DM handed me an NPC to play, a teutonic fighter named Vilgar. I mostly hung to the back of events, of course, occasionally piping up with (apparently) amusing quips. By the end of the session, everyone was in agreement that I would fit right in. So, I decided on a Ranger, probably a Half-Elf, and then came the tension of rolling my abilities. I did it in front of the group, so I wouldn't be tempted to find some way to optimize. The first two were 16s, and someone said, "I want your dice."
"They're casino dice, they should be dead honest." [roll roll, 7] "See?"
-I ended up with 16, 16, 15, 13, 11, 7. "We all know where that 7's going, don't we?"
"Hey, Animal Empathy is one of your exclusive skills; you sure you want the 7 in Charisma?"
-And so on. Even though I never played that much D&D, it so dominates the industry, and thus my mental RPG furniture, that this awakened all sorts of nostalgia. Very gratifying.
