woodwardiocom: (Wonder Woman)

Hmm. For those of you who know Marvel comics, who would you say is their premiere female character who . . .
  • Was not first introduced as a member of a team (Invisible Woman, Storm).
  • Is not explicitly the female version of a male character (Spider-Woman, She-Hulk).
  • Was not originally a villain (Black Widow, Elektra).
  • Has actually had her own title.
I'm having trouble thinking of one . . .

(At DC Comics, Wonder Woman clearly satisfies all these requirements, followed by Black Canary.)

MUCH LATER EDIT: Actually, Black Canary was a thief in her first couple appearances.

Dazzler, said to say. The Wasp never had her own book, as best I can recall.

Dazzler *was* initially introduced as part of the Hellfire Club/X-men stuff, though; she was offered a position in the X-men at the end of her first arc, and turned it down, though she had worked as part of the team. I don't know if that really counts.

Yes, but she was introduced as a solo singer, not as a formal member of the team, and she briefly teamed up with the X-Men vs. the Hellfire Club before going her way. Not the same thing as the others J. listed, I think.

IIRC, she also appeared in Fantastic Four and a Spider-Man book at about the same time as she did in X-Men. I think they were trying to get her out there before they launched the series.

Dazzler was created as a stand alone project, but the movie/album deal fell apart when Casablanca records folded and the X-Men team was asked to put her in a story in order to secure the copyright.

Hi,
I think Jessica Jones (from Alias - bendis work) might qualify...even had her own series for a while.

Dazzler fits all your criteria. (Egads! Scooped)

I don't know enough about her, but how about Elektra? Or is she just a Daredevil add-on?

She was originally a villain (of sorts).

Jess guessed my choice, although "premiere" might be stretching it.

Marvel very rarely introduces *anyone* outside of a team, though. They give them a run in a comic and then see what happens, and Marvel is by nature, far more team-based, as opposed to DC 'teams', which tend to be alliances. You'll be hard pressed to find most male characters who weren't introduced as a team member or villain, either...Silver Surfer and the Sub-Mariner were initially at least anti-heroes, if not villains.

I think as such it needs some clarification; I mean, Magik had her first appearance as a child in the 70s in the X-men, but was not part of the team, since she was shown as being, something like 5 years old. She had her own mini in 1983ish, before appearing as part of any team; she was brought onto the new mutants later, after she came back. So though she'd been shown in another comic, as a hero (of sorts), she first appeared in her own comic, unlike Dazzler, who appeared acting as part of a team (even if not official) before taking off on her own.

Millie the Model (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millie_the_Model), baby! She predates all the other Janie-Come-Latelies, and she's even in the canonical Marvel Universe.

I think Namora and Miss America fail the second test.

I think it's got to be The Cat/Tigra, depending on whether you consider Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) to be a "female version" of Captain Marvel. Hellcat first appeared in the Avengers as a costumed hero, though one could argue she wasn't really a member at the time. Shanna's also a good answer, since your OP doesn't really specify being a costumed superheroine or anything... dw
