Well (But Not Subtly) Played, McCain
Aug. 29th, 2008 11:14 amSo, this time next year, we will either have an African-American man as Pres, or a woman as Veep.
Welcome to the 21st Century.
(And the Second Gentleman would be Yup'ik? This is future shock I'm feeling, isn't it?)

Date: 2008-08-29 03:48 pm (UTC)It's certainly some kind of shock... I hadn't connected the dots yet on Palin's husband being Yup'ik... So of the First and Second couples not only would the VP be a woman but there would be a Native American in the mix? Huh.
Either way its going to be ground-breaking... though I am still hoping for a Democrat victory myself.

Date: 2008-08-29 04:41 pm (UTC)That's an oversimplification. Her first gubernatorial veto granted same-sex couples state benefits. And she knew it. She appears to be in the Obama mind-set on "well, not gay marriage, but we should recognize them somehow".
There will be plenty of political stones to throw, but let's get our aim focused.

Date: 2008-08-29 04:48 pm (UTC)By vetoing the law, she avoided a legal battle that a) the State of Alaska would have lost and b) would easily have had far wider reaching implications than just granting same-sex couples state benefits.

Date: 2008-08-29 06:27 pm (UTC)I'm just pleased that I can get down to examining the candidates to see which one is least noxious to me (they're politicians; they're all slightly noxious), cheerily knowing that either way, there's one for the history books. This makes me giggle.
Yes, I know I have a cold, black heart that is warmed by odd things.

Date: 2008-08-29 06:54 pm (UTC)The court fight could have had results well beyond the state employees, it likely would have resulted in the requirement for all employers that offered spouses benefits being required to offer same-sex partners benefits as well.
It could have gone so far as to require the state to establish Civil Unions or legalize same-sex marriage. Those were places the conservatives did not want be dragged to.
Thus the veto was, principles (if any) be damned, the more expedient choice.
