Lego Optimus Prime
Apr. 6th, 2008 03:13 pmI finally took and posted pictures of my attempt to create Optimus Prime out of Lego.

Full gallery, including transformation, here.
He's appallingly fragile, and not too stable on his feet. The lesson learned is that I either need to work to a smaller scale, so the joints can take the weight, or somewhat bigger, so that I can add more reinforcement. (Bigger is not actually an option for this specific guy, as his shoulder-tires are among the largest Lego makes.)
The most visible departure from the "real" character is the way his shoulders are attached to his front fenders. In the original (and the Hasbro toy), in robot mode, his shoulders are only attached to the hub of his shoulder-wheels. For Lego, the only way to do that would have been to have the whole arm assembly held up by one slim Lego axle. It would not have taken the weight.
But hey, he looks good.

Date: 2008-04-06 07:24 pm (UTC)Reminds me: a Lego artist just won $10,000 at my place of employment. There was a contest to display the company logo in any medium. Voting was via intranet, for all employees. The votes happened in 5 sub-categories, with the final runoff among the winners of each category. Lego Lad had 57% of his category, and about 50% of the popular vote. He beat out the skydivers, the cake ladies, and the giant snowmen.

Date: 2008-04-07 02:23 am (UTC)I would really like to come but I cannot say for sure. I am working all day that Saturday, and I can't trade for that weekend off because the weekend PRIOR is Andy's massive role-playing event (Deathfest) and the weekend AFTER is Eddie Izzard. So, we will try to come by, even if it is on the late side.
We'll call on our way out the door if we're coming. We really, really want to come, it's just very busy at work right now... I may be dead tired. sigh!
