Cloverfield Haiku Review

Except, it's not a witch, but
!@#$%ing Godzilla
While the ending was deliberately foreshadowed, hence predictable, it had some genuinely good moments, like the cell phone call from mom, and the "Hey, the camera's got night vision" scene.
Further the fundamental conceit is actually quite smart. Camera Guy is taping Our Hero's going-away party, when the monster attacks. We establish early on that he mistakenly used a tape that already had stuff on it, namely Our Hero's day at Coney Island with The Woman He Must Save. So, literally, the terrible events of the monster attack are taping over, replacing, their Good Day (which we get flashes of throughout the film). Much like Manhattan is replaced by a war zone. That one bit neatly elevates this from a film with a cool idea, to a well-done film with a cool idea. Recommended.
