All the tour books said, "If you visited Egypt, you'd see the pyramids, right? So you're in the Yucatan Pennisula. Go to Chichen Itza."

Our first view of El Castillo. The gentleman in the middle was our guide.

Lotta snake heads.

Though it's not immediately obvious, this is a carving of a kneeling man, who was facing left, before he was decapitated. There are seven fountains of blood coming out of his neck, seven being an important number to the Mayans.

Though I mostly avoided taking pictures of the other tourists . . . well, I mean, dayum.

This shot is looking up at the ceiling. There's still some color where the paint was protected from the elements.

We had about fifteen minutes of rain while we were there. This shows the clouds rolling in over El Castillo.

There were a few salesmen about. Like, dozens. All over the place.

A shot looking through knick-knacks to the ruins beyond.

Two trees growing out of another tree.

Some things never change.

Snake attack!

Yours Truly on the steps.

Good snake. Biscuit.

Great pictures, Jon. Did you hurt your leg there?

Great pictures, Jon.

Thanks!

Did you hurt your leg there?

I hurt my leg in December of 2005. Don't worry about it.

Very cool pictures. I so want to go to that place. By the way what's that black thing over your shoulder is it a thin back pack?

It's a Band-O-Gear.

I had the good fortune to go a year or two back, when they still let you climb the pyramid. Quite lovely. Did you take the early (6am-noon) trip? How was the afternoon heat?

How was the afternoon heat?

In early September in Mexico? Pretty damn hot. Thank god for the air-conditioned bus.
