Morrison's Seven Soldiers

-Anybody got a non-spoilery opinion of Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers "megaseries"? I've been thinking about picking up the trades. I've been a fan of Morrison since Animal Man, but some of his recent stuff has struck me as, eh, indulgently obscure and trippy.

(Of course, we're talking about the author who wrote himself into an issue of Animal Man, so it's not like he's newly indulgent . . . )

...of course, that "author" character was drafted into the Suicide Squad, and during one fight scene, he couldn't meet the battle's deadline, and was killed.

I just bought and read the Seven Soldiers "endcap" issue last night, so I was thinking about this last night. I liked several parts of the individual seven storylines, I was ok with the series resolution. Personally I'd describe as good but not great. Perhaps that's verging into too vague to be useful, but I hope not.

I've been getting the trades and found the individual stories kinda hit or miss. I like: Guardian, Bullet Girl, Shining Knight, Frankenstein and Zatanna.

Not so wild about: Klarion the Witch Boy and Mister Miracle. (Though I should say that my beef is that I'm a Scott Free purist and don't get a pair of fetid dingo's kidneys about Shilo Normal.)

I thought it was great fun, and well worth it.

You say "indulgently obscure and trippy" like that's a bad thing.

Well, it is indulgently obscure and trippy. And it's less so than The Filth, but more so than Invisibles, (well, more obscure, less trippy, just about as indulgent) if that helps set your parameters. It's also really quite clever, although if Morrison ever finds an editor who really understands Morrison, he should make that editor sign an indenture. I'd say it's certainly worth picking up in trades if you're a Morrison fan.
