Books: The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana

-Written by Jess Nevins/ratmmjess, this fat tome is the most definitive work on the subject I can imagine. If you're interested in the roots of modern genre literature, you need this book. I (obviously) have not read it cover to cover, but I've hit the highlights, and it has temporarily displaced the dictionary from our library stand, so I can stop and browse whenever I walk by. Highly recommended.

Yes, I agree, it is very neat. I spent many hours wandering off into it (and way off from my original research plan) when I was doing research for a recent Gaslight setting game.
