RotK rocked my world. Had a bit of a revelation talking about it over drinks afterwards. I was describing my reactions to an early scene, in which I felt the One Ring was saying to the audience, "In case you've forgotten, these movies are about me." Bro-in-law Barry said, "Well, it is right there in the title." I replied, "Wait a minute. Is the Lord of the Rings -- the actual 'Lord' -- Sauron, or the One Ring itself?" That stopped everyone for a minute.

-One ring to rule them all, indeed.

Good question.

Is there an answer?

There's an old acting adage that if you have a bit part in a movie, portray your character as if he is the star of the movie- don't act like your character is supporting the leads. Each character cares about themselves first. I am thinking of the Silly-Putty-faced orc which led the assault on Minas Tirith. He behaves as if he's the star of the movie, as he should. I think Tolkien mean Sauron to be the "L" in LOTR, but The One Ring is much bigger than Sauron.

that's heavy, dude

hmmmm...after much contemplation, I think I've decided to sign on to Barry's clever interpretation...Gandalf himself says in FOTR, "There is only one LOTR, and *he* does not share power," inferring that Sauron is the Lord...but he's so abstract and boring, really, with his lighthouse-beacon eye...just another ring-grubber in the end. the OneRing is supposed to be the distilled essence of Sauron's power/malice/evil, and it in fact controls the whole narrative, so i say it's more lordly. emily :)
