The Good: Batman #1 is not as good as Detective #1 and Batman And Robin #1, but it does a fine job of reestablishing Wayne's relationship with Gotham and the former Robins. Catwoman is the only DC title this week rated "Teen+" instead of "Teen", probably due to a darned hot sex scene. The art's a little objectifying but, well, it's Catwoman, and she's portrayed as neither dumb nor evil, so I'll take it. DC Universe Presents: Deadman is a surprisingly good recap of Deadman's career, both pre- and post-mortem, and the last page was a clever surprise. (Heh, I just noticed that the abbreviation for the title is "DCUP". Shouldn't this title be about Power Girl, hurr hurr?) Green Lantern Corps is too gory for my tastes, and I wish they'd get some smaller-scale threats once in a while, but the scenes of Guy and John trying to make civvie life work were nice.
The Bad: The stinker of the week is Red Hood and the Outlaws. First, it's too late to rehabilitate Jason Todd. Making him a murdering villain was a good move; dialing him back is not possible. Second... Well, let's be honest. Starfire (Koriand'r) has always been a bit of a bimbo. She's always been naive about Earth ways, she's always worn skimpy costumes, and she's always been a bit on the average side, intelligence-wise, especially when you stand her next to Dick Grayson and Co. But she was, when well written, at least a sincere character, a loyal and proud warrior, with skills and heart. In this title, it's asserted that Tamaranean memory is vague about humans, so he literally has no memory of her time with the Titans (or Dick Grayson). And she's picked up a tendency to joyless sex with whoever (including the murdering Jason Todd). I really disapprove.
The Undecided: Wonder Woman is confusing, in that they seem to be reinventing both Wondy and the Greek Gods wholesale, and they waste no time explaining the new status quo — meaning they spend no time explaining. However, I like the quirkiness thus far, her new costume isn't bad, and they're actually drawing her with a realistic bust. Nightwing is mostly about Dick, not Nightwing per se, and that's not a bad thing, but there's nothing to sink my teeth into yet. Birds Of Prey is a fun ride but, again, it's mostly a big fight scene. Blue Beetle may be a reboot (I haven't followed the character), and I may be too old for superteen books about sneaking out of the house to go to the cool party.
The Unremarkable: Legion Of Super-Heroes: Harmless, but my anger over last week's Legion Lost spills over onto this title. Captain Atom is about his powers going out of control. Yeah, that's never happened before. Supergirl is a cold reboot of the character, and I've already lived through two of those. Plus, her costume looks like she's tucking her shirt into a bikini bottom that has no sides. And, thigh-high boots with cutout knees? The hell?
