"SD" Stands For...
Aug. 30th, 2003 11:40 pm-So, in Japan there's this, I guess you'd call it, genre called "SD". It's basically characters from a normal show squashed down into a more cartoony style, with big heads and eyes, and teeny little bodies. There is, for example, a thriving SD subgenre of Gundam giant robots -- indeed, the SD Gundam stuff has outsold the regular Gundam stuff at several points in the franchise's history.
-In Japan, "SD" stands for "Super Deformed", which makes sense. The genre is about "deformed" versions of the regular characters. Someone, however, decided that wouldn't fly over here. I saw a bunch of SD Gundam toys in the Toys R Us today, and apparently in the US "SD" stands for "Superior Defender". Don't know what these little guys would be superior at defending. They've got such short arms and all...
