The Sandman trades are being released in a new edition with new covers and the recolored "Absolute" art. The first three came out this Wednesday.
Now I have to decide what to do with my individual issues. (Usually I get rid of issues if I buy the collection, but this is Sandman!)
I also have to decide what to do if they put them out in (normal-sized) hardcover next year. (I didn't get the Absolute Edition because it was too damn big.) I will occasionally buy something twice, but I hate to buy something three times . . .
(Oh, hey, I actually have a Sandman icon!)

I think the trade v. hardcover question can be answered best by your purpose in wanting to buy it. Do you want something to look pretty on your shelf and be easy to handle when you feel like rereading? Hardbacks. Or do you want something easily lendable? Trades. Other factors are important, of course, but those are the sorts of things I would think about.
Look, I have a Sandman icon too. :)

Date: 2010-10-14 05:57 pm (UTC)I was going to say, this is a pretty good problem to have as problems go, and then I remembered my consternation over the Twin Peaks DVDs and how I waited to buy the first season because I wanted to buy the first and second seasons all together, and then the second season came out and the first immediately went out of print, and I shook my fist at the heavens. So, yeah, you have my sympathies. Good luck!

Date: 2010-10-15 04:54 am (UTC)i suggest that you become deeply entrenched in star wars fandom. you'll grow accustomed to buying the same movie in a slightly new format every few years. i've been on that plan since the early 90s and it's been working well for me :)

(I prefer my mild entrenchment. I'm quite happy with my Star Wars laserdiscs. Get thee behind me, special editions.)
