-For the Hot Foods Party this past weekend, I made my traditional cheesy biscuits. I decided this year to make some of them actually, y'know, spicy, so we picked up some chipotle cheddar. The simplest way to make it easy to tell the spicy ones from the non-spicy ones was color, so I got the food coloring out of the back of the pantry. To experiement with how much pepper to use, I made a small test batch first.

-I'd never used food coloring for much of anything before, so when I tried to make the test batch red (Hot equals red, right?), I ended up with pink. After they were cooked, they were pretty darn odd-looking. Also, not quite spicy enough.

-I then made a double batch using regular cheddar and no pepper, and left them beige. Then I began the spicy double batch, using twice as much pepper as I'd put in the pink ones. The other two food coloring options were blue and green, so I decided to make these blue. After they were cooked, I ended up with a sickly blue-gray-green. Worse, the blobs of chipotle cheese had not been affected by the food coloring, so they had turned into beige-orange-red molten globs sticking out of the blue-gray-green blobs. They were seriously repellent-looking

-Bey/[livejournal.com profile] buxom_bey suggested I name them "mutant" biscuits, but I realized that they most resembled the Horta from Star Trek. So, they became Jon's "Horta-Style" Cheesy Biscuits.

-Fortunately, they still tasted good. They were all gone well before the end of the party. Next year I'll have to switch the colors around to make more sense.

(Edit: The recipe is just the Joy of Cooking "drop biscuit" recipe with cheese added. There's no tricks to it.)
