-I haven't read the Uglies - Pretties - Specials trilogy yet, though I intend to, based on the reviews I'm reading. For those on my friends-list who have read them, I'd like to recommend they track down "Liking What You See," a short story by Ted Chiang, available in his collection Stories of Your Life and Others. The premise is that science develops a simple and reversible way to shut off the part of the brain that perceives human beauty . . . I highly recommend the whole collection.

Haven't read those, but Westerfeld's adult fiction is quite good. I particularly enjoyed Evolution's Darling.

I think Ted Chiang is the new Alfred Bester.

Your lovely sister loaned me that collection, and I really loved it. "Division by Zero" and "Tower of Babylon" were the two stories I liked best. The first for its interesting parallels and how clearly emotional anguish and hopelessness was portrayed, and the second because it was one of the very best "alternate reality" stories I think I've ever read.

I've kept it too long; I need to return it when next I'm out your way.
