woodwardiocom: (Roo 1)
My in-laws live about two hours from Legoland Florida, so I was determined to take Roo and kin there as soon as she reached a practical age. I decided this year was it!

[livejournal.com profile] buxom_bey came along, as did her mother, Nana. Both were apparently expecting to be bored, and both had a better time than expected, so yay! Legoland is a full-fledged theme park, considerably smaller than the Disneys, but still big enough that we didn't see half of it in the four hours we were there. It is chock full of stores selling Lego merchandise, most of it exactly the same as you could get in a store or at Amazon (and at the same price, too), but there's some limited park-exclusive stuff.

After entry, we picked up a scooter for Nana, who can't walk long distances. I also promptly bought Roo a pink hippo Lego keychain, just to guarantee she'd have something to mess around with. We got our bearings, and headed to the two-story merry-go-round nearby. Roo was absolutely charmed by it, and we got her a horse on the top floor. (See the pic posted a couple days ago.)

We then visited the Factory exhibit, which is a highly simplified simulation of how they make Lego bricks. It had buttons and levers for Roo to mess with, so she had fun, though I was kinda hoping to see actual bricks getting made (like how the Coca-Cola Museum actually makes Coke on the premises). The Factory egress is through the massive Pick-a-Brick shop (Legos by the pound!) which I made note of for later.

After that, we tried to get a picture of her with a couple minifig character actors, but she was freaked out by them. We calmed her by taking her through a couple shops, including the pink-fest that is the Lego Friends shop. (I'm done with pink. Seriously.) We then headed over to Miniland, which is a whole lotta Lego dioramas of buildings, racetracks, ships, etc. Roo seemed to be fascinated by any that included water features, so afterwards we strolled down to the lakeshore, and watched part of a pirate-themed waterskiing exhibition while Roo played on the grass. The rest of the visit was strolling through various exhibits, and grabbing some (mediocre, pricy) hamburgers. Roo had one meltdown, which was entirely my fault (I lost her sunglasses), and justified, but we soothed her eventually. She got one more ride on the merry-go-round while I did some quick shopping. I was really hoping to get a unique minifig that said "Legoland Florida" on it, but couldn't find one. Still, there's always next time.

Roo promptly zonked out on the ride home, and got a nice solid nap. No one got sunburnt (it was a surprisingly hot day for Dec. 26, even in Florida), and I would call it as successful a theme park trip as one can have with a 2-year old. Recommended!

With the new year, I'll likely be moving a lot of my casual posts to FB instead. It is so entirely more convenient. Book posts and long-form stuff will probably stay here.
