woodwardiocom: (Xmas Tree)
-When it came time for the Woodward Family to make plans for Xmas, it turned out that my siblings and their spouses were all going to be spending the weekend with the other sides of their families. So, we all agreed to do the WF-Xmas-Thing in early January instead. Bey/[livejournal.com profile] buxom_bey and I still wanted to see my folks sometime around the holiday, though.

Bey: Well, why don't we invite them up for dinner on Christmas?

Me: Xmas is a working day for my mother. (Note: She's an Episcopalian priest.) So is Xmas Eve. How about Saturday the 23rd?

-The 23rd sounded good to Bey, and sounded good to my folks, so we agreed on that.

-Friday, while we're prepping food, we get a call from me mum, to decide exactly when they'd be arriving. In the course of the call, she finds out that we have no family plans for Xmas Day.

Mom: How did I not know that? I would have invited you to our place! I'm a bad, bad mother.

Me: No, mom, this was the plan. And you did know, you were in on the scheduling.

Mom: I'm terrible, letting my son and his fiancee sit around alone on Christmas. [melodramatic moan]

Me: Okay, cut it out, crazy lady. We're not sitting around, we're going to parties. And show up around 2pm, tomorrow, 'kay?

Mom: Oh, okay. Love you both.

-Saturday, the dinner goes splendidly. I made mashed potatoes and cheesy biscuits, Bey made cloves-n-pineapple ham, carrots with sauce, and a trifle the size of my head. Mom made blown-away noises about how pretty our tree is. Afterwards, as we sank into a food coma, we introduced them to House, MD. Yep, I think I'll keep them.

-Sunday, Xmas Eve, was Staxmas at [livejournal.com profile] lifecollage and [livejournal.com profile] mangosteen's. At which I once again proved that while my feet are size 12, my mouth is size 13. But, we had great time, ate good food, and watched the first half hour of The Muppet Movie. then, it was time to head down to my mother's church, for the Xmas Eve service. Word of this service had leaked to [livejournal.com profile] mizarchivist and her mother (MizA's folks were staying with her for the holidays), and she wanted to come, so it ended up being me, Bey, MizA, and her mother at Trinity Randolph. Having the company was very nice, and the service went well. One disconcerting moment came during the peace, when mom came down to say hi. One of her parishoners asked her if MizA's mother was her (my mother's) sister. There is actually a notable resemblance. We won't think about that too much.

-Afterwards we drove them back to MizA's place, and spent some time there socializing, drinking cocoa, and eating cookies. Mmm, cookies.

[We now interrupt this LJ post so Jon can go get some cookies.]

[Muzak ensues.]

[We now return to this LJ post, already in progress.]

-Monday was Christmas. Glee! The highlight of that day was [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli and [livejournal.com profile] danceboy's party, which featured more cookies, and meatballs, and some truly spectacular turkey (courtesy [livejournal.com profile] danceboy). And we watched Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death. And I got to meet [livejournal.com profile] jessruth, who I've probably been introduced to before, but this time there was, like, conversation and stuff. I discovered the immense utility of stair-sitting in a social context, a lesson I first learned back at college parties, but had since forgotten.

-Tuesday, Bey and I did absolutely nothing. We watched DVDs and ate leftovers and played Scrabble. [bliss]
