Books: Odd John by Olaf Stapledon
Apr. 9th, 2006 07:22 pm-This is a novel about a boy born with superhuman intelligence, who tries to find his place in the world, and ultimately fails, despite the help of others of his kind. Written in 1935, Stapledon doesn't quail at tackling some serious issues, which includes some deconstruction of nationalism, religion, philosophy, sexuality, and the moral responsibility of beings as much smarter than us than we are compared to our pets. Nevertheless, it never quite goes anywhere. Not the first novel in this demigenre, and certainly not the last, but still important. Mildly recommended, particularly to those interested in the evolution of SF as a genre.
