The Movers
Apr. 23rd, 2004 04:58 pm-So, I've used Nick's Moving of Somerville for a bunch of previous moves, with no complaints. A friend mentioned that she had had a really bad experience with them, but I decided to stick with them for this move, but to be prepared to get dictatorial on them if need be.
-They're due to show up at 10am Monday. 10:30 comes, and they're not there. I call, and the guy I get (Tom, I believe), says, "Uh, we have you down for May 21st."
"Are you joking?" I reply.
"No, um, let me see what I can do."
-I wait impatiently. Ring, ring. "Is tomorrow okay?"
-Tomorrow wouldn't be a huge deal, but I say, "If the best you can do is tomorrow, I expect a big discount."
"Um, let me see if I can get a team together for today."
-More waiting. Ring, ring. "We've got a team. The rate we quoted you ($130/hour) is for three guys, we're going to give you five, 'cause we need to get this done quick. It'll only be $10 more."
-I probably should have insisted on the original rate, but $10 more isn't lethal, and I'm not good at confrontation, so I said, "Fine, when will you be here?"
"Around noon."
-They arrive in Medford around 12:45, having left Somerville at 12:15. I grimace, but at least they're there.
-The loading, I must say, goes like magic. They pad everything that isn't cheap-@$$ pine, they move it fast, it gets done quickly. This is why they earned their two Best of Boston awards -- they can load a truck like frickin' superheroes.
-The drive to Milton is also uneventful -- they beat me there, so they weren't padding their time any. The unpacking is reasonably smooth, considering the tiny space they needed to get everything into. They listened to everything I said, and acted on it. They seemed a nice bunch of guys.
-That said, I wanted to make it clear I wasn't pleased by the scheduling mix-up, so I only gave them half what I usually tip movers. Presumably they will make their displeasure known to the scheduler. And, let's face it, the bill was steep, given my current finances. Yeah, I made them drive to Milton and back, but it still came to a lot of money.
(Oh, and, for that price, they shouldn't have left wads of packing tape behind.)
-So, overall, based solely on my experiences, Nick's Movers are high-priced, but good at their job. However, make absolutely sure to confirm the date a day or two before. And, other people have had negative experiences with them, so use a little caution.
