Matrix Symbolism [Maybe Minor Spoilers]
Nov. 2nd, 2003 03:47 pm-I've read numerous sites that "explain" the Matrix movies in one way or another. Some of them have good stuff, but the one thing I agree with them all about is, "Nothing in these movies is by accident."
-Meanwhile, one of the things I've been looking forward to in the 3rd film is the giant robot fight scenes. Anything is better with giant robots in it. In the shower this morning I realized that the Wachowski brothers probably didn't just put the robots in 'cause they're cool. Nothing is accidental.
-So, what are they threre for? What do giant robots usually symbolize? That's easy, they're armor or knights. If they're knights, there has to be a King Arthur around. Who's King Arthur? Well, one of his defining traits is that Guinevere left him for Lancelot. And, in Matrix Reloaded, we learn Niobe left Morpheus for Commander Lock. Who we see acting very Lancelot-like in the trailers for Revolutions, leadning the defense of Zion in one of those giant robots. So Morpheus is King Arthur.
-At this point I asked, "Okay, but who's Neo?" He doesn't work as Merlin. A colleague suggested he's Galahad, the unbeatable knight destined to achieve the grail. I kinda like that interpretation. (Though Galahad was Lancelot's son, and I don't recall Neo and Lock even exchanging "howyadoin"s. But still.) I could also draw parallels between Trinity and the Lady of the Lake, but that doesn't fit the original pattern too well either, since she "activated" Neo/Galahad, not Morpheus/King Arthur.
-Anway, this is a lot to hinge upon "What about the giant robots?" It might just be evidence for the monomyth, not anything the Wachowskis did intentionally. Still, fun.
